Base Gas Fees Explained

Base inherits Ethereum’s security model while batching transaction data more cheaply, which is why an ordinary transfer or swap on Base costs a fraction of the same action on Ethereum mainnet.

Why it is cheaper

Layer 2s like Base execute transactions off Ethereum mainnet and post compressed data back to it, spreading the mainnet cost across many transactions instead of charging it to one.

What still moves the price

Network demand on Base itself, and the cost of posting data back to Ethereum, both still affect what a transaction costs, so gas is cheap but not fixed.

Check before you sign

A wallet should show the gas cost in the currency you will actually pay before you approve a transaction. Review it the same way on Base as you would anywhere else.
